Last week brought us possibly one of the most unedifying sights possible - the Conservative Party cosying up to estate agents. They have joined forces to slate the new government initiative to improve the house-buying process - home information packs (HIPs). Caroline Spelman, shadow local government secretary, last week claimed the packs would neither stop gazumping nor speed up the process. She went on to say that HIPs would saddle sellers with an extra cost of £1,000, create more red tape and ultimately undermine a fragile housing market.
