Most DEAs / HIs struggle because they can't actyually offer what home sellers and estate agents actually need - i.e. a completed HIP. Most DEAs can only offer the EPC.
This makes it hard to win business. There are companies out there which provide training and access to systems which allow DEAs to compile their own completed hips. Plus some also allow you to offer deferred payments to your customers (and considering that about 50% of those people putting their houses onto the market this is pretty important).
Check out www.prontohips.co.uk - they seem to offer a pretty comprehensive package, but there are others available.

Also came across another company (via Prontohips) which is offering personal search training. See YourHIPSearch www.localauthoritysearches.co.uk . Not many people realise it but there is actually more money to be made out of providing the personal search element of the HIP (as opposed to the EPC), particulary seeing as the average price paid for an EPC now seems to be around £40!! I'm not aware of anyone who has gone through the training, but seems like a good idea in theory.

The search field is now massively competitive as is being a DEA. Search fees have reduced massively though not as widely reported as the DEA numbers.

Most within the market place are feeling the pinch, including training providers. Training as a DEA as you mention is now a market that is fully saturated. Read this article and comments from practicing DEAs. training as a DEA

We certainly wouldn't use any search provider who was not search code registered as probably the biggest area for possible comeback on inaccuracies.
