In November property sellers in six selected locations were able to provide home information packs to potential purchasers for a trial period. This roll out will be extended in January in 12 additional locations. HIPs will then become mandatory in June 2007.

Last year, when the housing market pundits did their annual turn as Mystic Meg, they predicted a boring 2006 - house price rises of just 2-3 per cent and a generally sluggish market

They were wrong - the year got off to a flyer and just kept on going. Central London, Scotland and Northern Ireland all racked up double-digit price rises, while values nationally rose by around eight per cent.

Strong demand, weak supply and a healthy economic situation kept the pressure on in 2006 and the general consensus seems to be that these factors should continue to underpin the market in the coming year.

A trial of new home information packs (HIPs) is to be extended to 12 new locations across England and Wales. The packs, which aim to give home buyers more information at the start of the process, are already being piloted in six areas.

The Law Society will be trialling its HIPs solution in Southampton in conjunction with MDA in November and a seminar on 3 November will provide you with information on the Law Society HIP and its Southampton dry run. Work is continuing on a support programme to help you work with estate agents to market HIPs.

Experts have dismissed a trial roll-out of the controversial home information packs - Hips - as a 'sham'. The packs aim to cut the number of house sales that fall through and speed up the process. Sellers pay up to £500 for documents with key information about a property. These are made available to potential buyers.
