Local independent estate agents are running the risk of losing their independence when HIPs are introduced, says Hailstone, as new major corporate players enter the market in the wake of HIPs. The announcement by supermarket chain ASDA that they are to enter the home sales market and will give HIPs away free is a perfect example of what is likely to happen. In my view, local estate agents need to act now to protect their independence not wait until next year.

The CML welcomes the timeline that the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has today published for implementing home information packs. The CML regards this as essential to enable the ODPM and the industry to work together to an agreed timetable, and to monitor whether progress is on track.

In just over a year, the home information pack (HIP) will be part of every property transaction. The Government insists it will be better for the public - but criticism is mounting. Last week, the Conservative Party said it will oppose its introduction, and research by the National Association of Estate Agents shows that the public is beginning to have doubts.

Last week brought us possibly one of the most unedifying sights possible - the Conservative Party cosying up to estate agents. They have joined forces to slate the new government initiative to improve the house-buying process - home information packs (HIPs).
